BPH Foods

A beneficial diet that promotes overall health will also help keep your prostate healthy. Half of all men over the age of 50 suffer from BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), a non-malignant enlargement of the prostate gland. BPH symptoms include inflammation and swelling of the prostate and painful, frequent urination. Here’s some dietary tips to support a healthy prostate and help reduce symptoms of BPH.

Eat lycopene-rich foods such as tomatoes, fruits and vegetables. The antioxidant lycopene, abundant in tomatoes, can reduce the risk of prostate inflammation and cancer. Lycopene is a carotenoid pigment that gives tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables (watermelon, grapefruit, guava, rosehip, and red chilies) their color. Research suggests that lycopene is more easily absorbed by the body if in cooked tomatoes (like tomato sauce, paste or juice). Eat two servings of tomatoes daily, along with five other fruit and vegetable servings.

Avoid foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol (such as butter, margarine, red meat and whole milk), fried foods and refined carbohydrates (white bread and white-flour pasta), These types of foods can cause hormonal imbalances in men and increase the occurrence of BPH. Saturated fats also increase the risk of inflammation and chronic diseases.

Eat more foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3 oils found in salmon, sardines, mackerel, nuts and seeds help reduce inflammation and promote hormonal balance. Some experts recommend taking up to one tablespoon of flaxseed oil per day  Raw pumpkin seeds are also high in zinc, an essential mineral that helps maintain prostate health.

Soy-based foods provide beneficial isoflavones (a phytoestrogen) that help support healthy hormonal balance. Soy foods like tofu, tempe, and fortified soy milk can help lower the risk of heart disease, certain cancers and digestive disorders, and hormone-dependent conditions such as BPH.

Add more fiber into your diet. Fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and flaxseeds not only improve regularity, but help prevent chronic diseases such as cancer, arthritis, and heart disease. Fiber can help improve regularity, thereby decreasing pressure on the prostate from the lower bowel area.
